ESU Debating Cup 2015 – Preliminaries N


ESU DEBATING CUP
Monday 16th – Friday 20th November 2015

Arranged jointly by Virum Gymnasium, Næstved Gymnasium and
The English-Speaking Union (ESU-DK)

and sponsored by British Airways

The preliminary rounds and training sessions were held:
Monday & Tuesday at Virum Gymnasium for the Northern area (Nørre G, Ordrup Gymnasium, Rungsted Gymnasium, Rysensteen Gymnasium, Skt Annæ Gymnasium & Virum Gymnasium)
Wednesday & Thursday at Næstved Gymnasium for the Southern area. (CELF Nykøbing, Herlufsholm School, Køge Gymnasium and HF, Nykøbing Katedralskole, Næstved Gymnasium and HF, Sorø Akademi & Vordingborg Gymnasium and HF)

The mentors Natalie Katharine Burles and Michael Francis Hepburn, were recruited from the ESU-HQ in London, led the training sessions and guided events.

This year, the Irish Ambassador H.E. Cliona Manahan had arranged for a debating team from  DSC02249_DxO Presentation de la Salle College, Bagenalstown, County Carlow, Ireland to take part in two “Showcase” debates.

The team – Brianna Walsh, Saoirse Power, Beatrice Kelly and Caoimhe Cummins – were  the winners of Concern Debates National Champions 2014-2015 and were accompanied by their teacher Ita Doyle  and Geraldine Carroll from Concern Worldwide.

Their Showcase debate against Skt Annæ Gymnasium was held at Virum Gymnasium on the Monday and was followed by training sessions of the northern teams.

A reception was held at the Irish Embassy on the Monday evening.

On the Tuesday at Virum

4 x “pre-quarter-finals”  were debated on the motion that This house prefers a good dictatorship to a bad democracy.

following which, 2 x quarter-finals where the motion debated was This house would ban violent video games
